Dec 2011 - Peter Myers - Developing an Analysis Services Tabular Project BI Semantic Model
SQL Server PowerPivot, first released with SQL Server 2008 R2, empowers business users to create their own tabular data models in Excel 2010. In this presentation you will learn how the features of PowerPivot have been enhanced to support the creation of more sophisticated data models, and that these and additional features are available to the developer to create and secure larger scale solutions.
This presentation is targeted at IT professionals with an interest in data analysis and equally for non-IT professionals interested to understand and evaluate the new data modelling capabilities delivered in the upcoming release of Analysis Services. Those with a background in PowerPivot and/or developing Analysis Services Unified Dimensional Models will benefit from a comprehensive overview of the new data modelling capabilities, theory and discussion to understand when each modelling choice is appropriate.
Note: All theory and demonstrations will be based on the latest publicly available version of SQL Server 2012 (formerly Code Name “Denali”) which for Analysis Services is considered to be feature complete.

Thursday 24/11/2011 05:30:00 PMOct 2011 - Peter Ward - Keeping the DBA out of the Database
With the regulations and compliance that many organisations are scrutinised with today, it is often no longer an option for a Database Administrator to be a member of the sysadmin Server Role. If you remove a DBA from the sysadmin Server Role then how do they manage the database platform and perform common administrative functions? In this presentation you will see how the Separations of Duties Framework can be implemented to assist in setting up a restrictive Microsoft SQL Server environment. The presentation provides practical demonstrations based on real-world experience working with classified information. Armed with this information you will be able to configure an environment that limits the processes a DBA can perform, whilst ensuring that they are kept out of the database and away from sensitive information.
